Theatrescapes
Schauspiel Frankfurt

In this episode of "Theatrescapes", Esther Schweins introduces the city of Frankfurt am Main and its theatre.

The Schauspiel Frankfurt can look back on a turbulent theatre era. At the end of the 1960s, the co-determination model was introduced and various productions caused political scandals during this time.

Conversations with the then artistic director Peter Palitzsch and the critic Peter Iden recall the wild times. Hilmar Hoffmann, Head of the Department of Culture from 1970-1990, tells of his frequent assignments as mediator in nightly discussions and the numerous quarrels.
But the protests surrounding the premiere of R. W. Fassbinder's play "Der Müll, die Stadt und der Tod" in 1985 are also discussed. Mayor Petra Roth describes what makes Frankfurt so unique and the actress Leslie Malton talks about her impressions of Frankfurt as a banking city. The artistic directors Elisabeth Schweeger and Günther Rühle also have their say.
