Theater Heidelberg

Heidelberg is located in the beautiful Neckar Valley. The romantic fairytale setting of the castle, the picturesque old town and the lively student life characterise the university town. Numerous films, songs and visitors from all over the world bear witness to the fascination that Heidelberg exudes.

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary, Esther Schweins presents the Heidelberg Theatre. It was difficult for the people of Heidelberg to get their own theatre. For years, the monopoly position of the Mannheim National Theatre prevented Heidelberg from getting its own theatre. Finally, in 1853, it was built in only six months according to plans by the grand ducal building inspector Louis Lendorf. The Schlossfestspiele, founded in 1926, attracts stars such as Heinrich George, Thomas Mann and Gerhart Hauptmann. Johann Kresnik's choreographic theatre of the 1980s and the Heidelberg Stückemarkt, founded in 1984, attract national attention. Since the beginning of the 2000/01 season, Günther Beelitz has been the artistic director of the four-part theatre.

The film shows the history of the Theater Heidelberg. Archive footage with production excerpts of Johann Kresnik's sensational works or tumultuous performances by Hansgünther Heyme with Gottfried John bear witness to the time and directors Hans Neuenfels and Michael Quast as well as artistic directors Peter Stoltzenberg and Günther Beelitz talk about their impressions.
