Antonia Fietz is costume designer and head of the costume department at the Staatstheater Braunschweig. Everything worn on stage passes through her hands - whether it's a tailor-made suit or an outfit put together from the trove.
The costume designer develops a costume concept for the respective production in consultation with the director, make-up designer and set designer. To do this, he can draw on the often extensive collection or he has to design the costumes himself. Mostly, of course, a mixture of both is necessary. In any case, imagination and creativity are necessary, as well as knowledge of styles and materials. The costume designer's designs are produced in collaboration with the wardrobe master and the tailor. In the end, of course, each garment must fit perfectly. Usually several fittings are necessary until the actor feels perfectly equipped for his role. This sometimes includes hats or masks, which are then also designed by the costume designer. During the performance, the costume designer helps to ensure that the actors can manage all the moves in the given time.
