Together with the set designer, the prop master checks which utensils are needed for a production in addition to the costume or set. Depending on the director's requirements, the prop master has to tinker, build, buy, track down. He often makes use of the existing stock of props and modifies existing ones if necessary. He is also responsible for special productions, for which he must have knowledge of material science and art and cultural history. Directly before, during and after a performance he has a lot to do: Before the performance the props have to be prepared so that the actors can use them quickly and correctly. Even during the performance, props such as fake blood are still being made. Afterwards, everything has to be tidied up, cleaned or even repaired for the next day. Often the prop master has an additional qualification that allows him to use pyrotechnic effects. If there is no in-house armourer, he is also responsible for the provision and reworking of weapons for the stage.
