Theatrescapes
Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe

Esther Schweins takes a look around Karlsruhe, the city of law, innovative urban planning and high-tech research. She introduces the Baden multi-arts theatre and takes a look inside the Federal Constitutional Court, for which the theatre had to change its location.

The former president of the Federal Constitutional Court, Jutta Limbach, comments on the importance of the highest court for the city and the possible effects on the theatre programme. Sometimes a tongue-in-cheek legal look is taken at the great theatre literature, as in the performance of "Richter Adam", at the Federal Court of Justice, which flanked the production of Kleist's "Zerbrochnen Krugs" at the Staatstheater. There, a village judge sits in judgement on himself and the State Theatre has asked prominent Karlsruhe jurists to reopen the case. General director Achim Thorwald, ballet director Birgit Keil, designer Luigi Colani and others provide information about the theatre and the city of Karlsruhe.

Esther Schweins takes a look at the theatre's tailor shop, the huge shoe warehouse, looks over the shoulder of a wigmaker and learns to breathe fire with pollen in the armoury. The programme also examines how the theatre is influenced by the internet capital Karlsruhe, home to the Centre for Art and Media Technology.
