Theater Magdeburg

The first German Emperor Otto made Magdeburg his favourite palace. This laid the foundation for the city's growth into a Central European metropolis. The history of theatre also boasts great names Richard Wagner was music director in Magdeburg, and the expressionist Georg Kaiser was born here.

Especially in the 20th century, Magdeburg, by now a city dominated by the heavy machinery industry, lost its good reputation: heavily destroyed during the war, rebuilt by the GDR in the typical style of socialist urban planning, and after the fall of the Wall badly shaken by the problems of reunification, Magdeburg today struggles to restore its once good name.

The "Theater Magdeburg" has played no small part in this. With its young team, it has become one of the city's meeting places in recent years and has repeatedly attracted national attention with its productions. Not least because it has lured one of the most important directors back to his home town with guest productions: Andreas Kriegenburg.

A voyage of discovery through the new Magdeburg, the one that is still "invisible" from a distance, with actors Jaecki Schwarz, handball player Stefan Kretzschmar, director Andreas Kriegenburg and, of course, the Magdeburg theatre makers around artistic director Tobias Wellemeyer.

First broadcast: Sunday, 11 January 2009, 12.30 p.m., 3Sat.
