Theater Lübeck

"An artistic capital event of my life", Thomas Mann raved about a visit to the theatre in Lübeck.

Since 1752, the theatre in the Beckergrube has been the cultural centre of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck. At that time, a permanent theatre house was established on the initiative of a master carpenter. In 1908, thanks to a private donation by the then senator Emil Possehl, one of the largest, most modern and at the same time most beautiful art nouveau theatres in Germany was inaugurated.

Fortunately, the theatre survived the Allied bombing raids without major damage. In the nineties, the theatre was completely renovated. The continued existence and renovation of the Theatre Lübeck is due in no small part to the private initiative of many Lübeckers who have supported the company with donations in kind and money. Since 1998 the theatre has been run as a limited company.
