Theatrescapes
Deutsch-Sorbisches Volkstheater Bautzen

Many people first associate the name Bautzen with the notorious Stasi prison Bautzen II. But the city in Upper Lusatia does not deserve this negative image. It is over a thousand years old, is sometimes called the "Nuremberg of the East" because of its beautiful old town and castle, and is home to the only professional bicultural theatre in Germany.

The performances of the German-Sorbian Folk Theatre are shown in both German and Sorbian. The Sorbs have lived in Lusatia since the 6th century, they founded the city of Bautzen and today about 40,000 Sorbs speak Sorbian in everyday life. The theatre in Bautzen can look back on a tradition of over 300 years; the first theatre house in Bautzen is mentioned as early as 1700 and the famous Neuberin made guest appearances in the city.
