A Life Beside
Burning Man

"A life beside" shows bizarre and adventurous life worlds. What drives people to flee, how do they set up their new lives and how big is the difference between them and us "normal citizens"? What is the fascination of the different subcultures? Because apparently they offer something that the "real" world cannot offer people.

The "Burning Man", a wooden figure about 15 metres high, is the centre of a festival in the Nevada desert that is now attended by almost 50 000 people. At the end of the Burning Man week, the wooden figure is burned - an extraordinary spectacle. The film accompanies the festival-goers who leave their everyday lives behind during these days, stand completely under the sign of community and create their own universe in the desert.

First broadcast: Fri, 05 August 2011, 22:00, ZDF.Kultur.
