Olaf Grambow is Technical Director at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin. As Technical Director, he knows his theatre like the back of his hand. Twice a day he roams the aisles and checks whether all safety regulations are being observed or whether repairs need to be made. A degree in engineering is useful in recognising defects and sources of danger. However, the technical director does not have time to carry out repairs himself. His job is often a pure office job and he spends many hours in meetings.
The Technical Director spends most of his working time in meetings, so his job is also an office job - far away from technical challenges. In addition, he has to go on a tour of the building twice a day. Then everything is conscientiously checked and inspected. A technical director has to ensure that the safety regulations are observed: Are the escape routes clear? Are there enough fire extinguishers? And above all: Is the action on stage safe for the life and limb of the audience?
