A football fairy tale

Love and football are the true passions of life. In a rousing docu-play, a kaleidoscope of emotional football history emerges: interwoven with a fictional German-German love story, "Wir Weltmeister" shows the greatest moments of German World Cup history with rare archive material and top-class contemporary witnesses. A material to dream about.

Max (Jens Atzorn) and Anna (Aline Hochscheid) meet and fall in love as children on 4 July 1954 in Mecklenburg. It is the day on which the German eleven sensationally becomes football world champions in Bern. However, Max is separated from his girlfriend when he flees to the West with his family. From then on, however, he is determined to see his Anna again, because he firmly believes in a cosmic football law: the German national team can only win a World Cup if he is with Anna.

In documentary inserts, the great football stars from Seeler and Beckenbauer to Klinsmann have their own say and tell gripping stories about their defeats and successes at the major tournaments. What they do not know: Their art of playing did not depend on tactics, fitness and lactate levels, but on the romantic impulses of a football maniac who tried to overcome the Iron Curtain.

First broadcast: Tue., 09 May 2006, 20:15, ZDF.
