Germany has one cultural legacy which is unrivalled anywhere in the world: its theater scene. Theater in Germany is more lively and versatile than in any other land. Nowhere else in the world are there so many theaters, and nowhere else is the theater regarded as such an integral part of social life - which also involves subsidies on an unparalleled scale.
In the series Theater Portraits, comprising 72 episodes since it was launched in 2002, BROADVIEW TV in association with 3sat and the digital channel ZDFtheaterkanal has been portraying municipal and national theaters, rural theaters and private theaters, in small towns as well as major cities. In each thirty-minute documentary Esther Schweins takes viewers on a tour through the history and the stories of an individual theater, depicting the past as well as the present of a cultural region.
