The Miracle of Bern – The True Story

No other sporting success was such a magnificent surprise to Germans as the legendary 3:2 victory over the favorites, Hungary, on 4th July 1954 in the final of the World Cup. Many people who remember that day regard it as something like a fairy tail - while for others is even more: the miracle of Bern. This film was awarded the German Television Prize in the category Best Documentary in 2004.

On 4th July millions of Germans were sitting in front of their radio sets, waiting for the words of sports commentator Herbert Zimmermann which would relieve the incredible tension: "It's over, over, over! The game is over! Germany has won the World Cup!" The game quickly became part of mythology, the player hailed as the heroes of Bern, and all Germans began to feel like world champions: the victory was celebrated as the true birth of the Federal Republic of Germany. But this film doesn't end with the final whistle; it shows what became of the victors and the losing Hungarian team. The film also explores awkward subject such as the accusations of doping which were made against the German players. Can the myth survive intact?
