German Dynasties: Haniel

The story of their success sounds like a fairy tale. Today the Haniels are among the most famous and wealthiest industrial families in Germany. After rising to prominence during the 19th century by employing industrial espionage and a series of cleverly planned marriages, during the 20th century they cemented their position among the top heavy industry groups worldwide.

As their company celebrates its 250th anniversary, the Haniels have permitted for the first time an intimate look behind the scenes of their widespread commercial empire. The secret of their success? The descendants of the generation which founded the company have withdrawn increasingly from business activities, leaving operational decisions to successful managers. But today the family has over 500 members, all of whom are shareholders in the company. How is it possible to concentrate on such a wide variety of interests without endangering the very existence of this unique empire?
