Ingmar Bergman
Herr der Dämonen

He calls them his demons - these fears and neuroses that keep him awake at night in his house on the island of Farö. Ingmar Bergman is under observation.

The Swedish theatre and film director Ingmar Bergman had a decisive influence on cinema. At the end of his life, more than 40 films and countless theatre productions remain. In 2018 he would have turned 100. In her documentary film "Ingmar Bergman - Lord of the Demons", Henrike Sandner lets the filmmaker's most important companions and friends have their say, including the actress Liv Ullmann.

Corinna Harfouch lends her voice to the film as narrator. In addition, Ingmar Bergman's most important works in cinema and on stage are shown in excerpts, because Bergman, who won the Oscar three times and was honoured as "Best Director of All Time" in Cannes, can only be understood through his work.

His private life also plays into his work. Stable relationships are rare in Ingmar Bergman's life and usually short-lived. As a father, he is absent, selfish and inconsiderate. He feels this guilt and yet he can't counter it with anything but an escape into fantasy. "I was constantly plagued by desire, fear, anxiety and a guilty conscience," Bergman says of himself. Through his films and theatre productions, he succeeds in becoming master of the demons he suffers from.
