The green island
A journey through time to Ireland

For a long time, the "Emerald Isle" was considered the poorhouse of Europe. But Ireland has long since become not only the richest country in the EU and Europe's No. 1 IT location, but has also become a new home for many Germans.

Irland, that means big city flair next to rural idyll, a wild, rugged coastal landscape in combination with gentle hills and the close coexistence of historical reminiscences and lively contemporary culture. This unique mixture has made Ireland a favourite destination for German emigrants and holidaymakers since the 1950s. Filmmaker Beatrice von Schilling goes in search of the most exciting and beautiful places on the "Emerald Isle".

First broadcast: Fri, 01 May 2009, 13:10, ARD.
