Profession: Queen!
Letizia von Spanien

Spaniards knew the award-winning journalist as the presenter of her main news programme. Her stellar media career ended with her wedding, after which Letizia began a completely different life, first as Crown Princess, then as Queen. But some compatriots still see her as an ambitious journalist. From the very beginning, Letizia wants not only to collect patronages, but to delve deeply into issues that are close to her heart: Health, nutrition, education and women's rights. In doing so, she openly shows a clear stance. This is new for a Spanish queen and it is not always well received.

Working visits, receptions, trips, speeches - everything is prepared precisely at her own desk. Three staff members support the Queen in this. ZDF was able to see this for itself in her office. For all her professionalism, she outwardly looks more like a manager than a mother of the country, as her mother-in-law Queen Sofia was. Some tabloids therefore accuse her of arrogance.

Filmmaker Julia Melchior accompanied and observed Letizia of Spain for a year during appointments at home and abroad. The result is a close-up that shows a committed queen. Tirelessly at work, whether as FAO Special Ambassador at World Food Day in Rome, on a humanitarian mission to the disaster area of Mozambique or in the fight against trafficking in women and prostitution. Letizia puts the issues in the spotlight, denounces grievances even in her own country. The government has found an ally in the Queen, for example for the "State Pact against Violence against Women". Although the former top journalist fits into the tradition-steeped Spanish royal family, she wants to be a queen of the 21st century, with professional demands and a standing of her own. It is a permanent job, unlike the first ladies of states with elected presidents.

Prominent interviewees such as María Neira, Director of the WHO, Charles Powell, Director of the think tank "Elcano", Juan Pablo de Laiglesia, Secretary of State for International Cooperation, and Nobel Prize for Literature winner Mario Vargas Llosa report on how Queen Letizia of Spain understands and fulfils her job.
