We world champions

A soccer fairytale

Love and soccer are the true passions of life.
A kaleidoscope of emotional soccer history is created in a rousing documentary: interwoven with a fictional German-German love story, "We World Champions" uses rare archive footage and top-class contemporary witnesses to show the greatest moments in German World Cup soccer history.
The stuff of dreams.

Max (Jens Atzorn) and Anna (Aline Hochscheid) meet and fall in love as children on July 4, 1954 in Mecklenburg.
It is the day on which the German team sensationally wins the World Cup in Bern.
However, Max is separated from his girlfriend when he and his family flee to the West.
From then on, he is determined to see Anna again because he firmly believes in a cosmic soccer law: the German national team can only win a World Cup if he is with Anna.

In documentary inserts, the great soccer stars from Seeler and Beckenbauer to Klinsmann themselves have their say and tell gripping stories about their defeats and successes at the major tournaments.
What they don't know: Their art of playing did not depend on tactics, fitness and lactate levels, but on the romantic impulses of a soccer maniac trying to overcome the iron curtain.

First broadcast: Tuesday, May 09, 2006, 8:15 p.m., ZDF.
