"The world as a guest with friends" - the motto of the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Fans from all over the world came to NRW in their tens of thousands: Dortmund, Gelsenkirchen and Cologne were the venues and the whole state became a cheerful, colorful "public viewing" zone. It was a summer that changed NRW and Germany - a summer that became a "summer fairytale".
Shortly before the start of Euro 2024, Frank Diederichs' film travels back to the 2006 World Cup summer and brings this special atmosphere back to life. He meets people who experienced their own personal "summer fairytale"; people like Gerald Asamoah, who tells the story of how the team that nobody really believed could do anything finally became the "world champions of the heart" with coach Jürgen Klinsmann.
Footballer TuğbaTekkal tells us what she experienced when she proudly wore her German jersey for the first time this summer. And Rebecca Zaun, chairwoman of the Cologne Ghana Union, remembers the mood in the community after her "Black Stars" beat the Czech Republic.
It was the summer when people all over the country were in each other's arms, trembling, cheering and crying. "Black, red and gold" suddenly also stood for hospitality and carefree celebrations. One person who was instrumental in ensuring that nothing got out of hand during the spontaneous "pack watching" was police director and head of operations Volker Lange. He talks about the public viewing on the banks of the Rhine in Cologne, when thousands of Swedish and English fans came together and the beer flowed freely.
