Back to the future

1985.

After 15 years of construction, the most modern hospital of the time opened in Aachen: the University Hospital - looking like a UFO.
Pediatrician Lisa Lassay and nurse Wolfgang Klein entered their new working environment for the first time in 1985.
They talk about what it meant for them and their patients to find their way around this new planet and settle in.

In Cologne-Bocklemünd, WDR built the future of television and launched the first German soap opera: Lindenstraße.
Sybille Waury moved in as Tanja Schildknecht at the age of 15 and has never left.
She tells how she had to grow into the role of the little beast Tanja as a well-behaved 15-year-old, grew up with her and finally even found the love of her life.

Gunther Nogge experienced his worst day as director of Cologne Zoo in 1985.
Because a keeper had accidentally left the monkey cage open, the chimpanzee Petermann escaped, attacked Nogge and seriously injured him.
Petermann, an audience favorite and celebrated stage star in the 50s and 60s, was shot while fleeing and became a Cologne legend.

The movie "Back to the Future" marked the beginning of a new era for two Docs from Münsterland in 1985.
From then on, they pursued their childhood dream of converting a Delorean into a time machine.
In 2015, Marty McFly landed in the future and with him Dr. Oliver Wirtz from Borken and Dr. Josef Hesse from Münster-Roxel.
It was only then that they got to know each other and worked together to perfect the conversion.
Until even Hollywood itself stopped by.

For the quick-change artist Günter Wallraff, things went downhill in 1985.
In the role of the Turkish Ali Levent, he uncovered massive grievances as a temporary worker at various companies.
His book "Ganz unten" caused quite a stir and sold over 5 million copies.

Sporting events in 1985 were out of this world.
And not just because Boris Becker won Wimbledon.
In the DFB Cup final, the underdog Bayer 05 Uerdingen defeated the big Bavarians.
From then on, Krefeld was a soccer city and Wolfgang "Cup" Schäfer had made himself unforgettable, and not just with his winning goal.

Ten prominent personalities from NRW are sponsoring and narrating the films.
They tell the stories and events of their highlight year, making the series "Unser Land - Die 80er" a very personal and entertaining journey back in time to an explosive decade.

First broadcast: Friday, September 14, 2018, 8.15 p.m., WDR
