Theater Heidelberg

Heidelberg is located in the beautiful Neckar Valley.
The romantic fairytale backdrop of the castle, the picturesque old town and the lively student life characterize the university town.
Numerous films, songs and visitors from all over the world bear witness to the fascination that Heidelberg exudes.

Esther Schweins presents the Heidelberg Theater on the occasion of its 150th anniversary.
It was difficult for the people of Heidelberg to get their own theater.
For years, the monopoly position of the Mannheim National Theatre prevented Heidelberg from having its own theater.
Finally, in 1853, it was built in just six months according to plans by the grand ducal building inspector Louis Lendorf.
The castle festival, founded in 1926, attracts stars such as Heinrich George, Thomas Mann and Gerhart Hauptmann.
Johann Kresnik's choreographic theater of the 1980s and the Heidelberg Play Market, founded in 1984, attract national attention.
Since the beginning of the 2000/01 season, Günther Beelitz has been the director of the four-part theater.

The film shows the history of Theater Heidelberg.
Archive footage with production excerpts from Johann Kresnik's sensational works or tumultuous performances by Hansgünther Heyme with Gottfried John bear witness to the time and the directors Hans Neuenfels and Michael Quast as well as artistic directors Peter Stoltzenberg and Günther Beelitz talk about their impressions.
