The actor, director and Tatort commissioner Peter Sodann came to Halle an der Saale as acting director in 1980 and, as the acting ensemble in the old multi-genre theater was not working to capacity, he decided to build a new theater without further ado.
In 1981, an old cinema hall was converted and the "neue theater halle" was founded.
Today, the complex includes the Great Hall, a court theater, a chamber theater, a puppet theater, a gallery, a library with literature published in the GDR between 1945 and 1989, a literature café and a theater pub.
Peter Sodann guides Esther Schweins through his theater, takes her to what is probably the only burial place for a theater cat and shows her the bell tower of the Kulturinsel.
He tells, among other things, how he and his fellow campaigners had to overcome all kinds of obstacles from the authorities during construction, as in the GDR there were neither materials nor construction workers for such a project - which was never officially planned.
