This episode of "Theater Landscapes" takes Esther Schweins to the Elbe, to Dresden. The Staatsschauspiel Dresden is one of Germany's most renowned theaters and is considered one of the most important theaters in eastern Germany.
Numerous premieres, in particular by the author Peter Hacks, have taken place there. The world premiere of Christoph Hein's "Die Ritter der Tafelrunde", for example, is now considered the parable production of the GDR reunification period. Popular actors such as Erich Ponto, Rolf Hoppe and Dagmar Manzel were part of the ensemble.
Esther Schweins introduces the "Florence on the Elbe" and its rich heritage and discovers that not everyone is immediately enthusiastic about the Dresdeners' faithful reconstruction work. Architect Wolfgang Hänsch, responsible for the reconstruction of both the Semper Opera House and the Schauspielhaus, reports on his experiences. Finally, actor Peter Herden, a member of the ensemble since 1950, explains that his love for Dresden and the people of Dresden only developed and grew as a result of witnessing the reconstruction of Dresden and the joy of every new monument.
The directors Dieter Görne and Holk Freytag, the actress Christine Hoppe and her father Rolf Hoppe also have their say in the film. Directors Wolfgang Engel and Klaus Dieter Kirst talk about their experiences in Dresden. And theater photographer Hans Ludwig Böhme talks about the exciting time of change, which he documented in his pictures.
