"Attention, the performance starts in 5 minutes!": As the link between the artists and the technical team, the stage manager organizes the course of a performance. When the curtain goes up, when the special effect starts, which actor has their entrance and when - the stage manager coordinates all of this via light signal or loudspeaker announcement from their command center.
Above all, a stage manager must radiate calm and composure, and Paul Adler, stage manager at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, does this without a doubt. He reacts with confidence and concentration to unforeseen incidents and sometimes has to save a yacht from capsizing on stage. But that's just one of the pitfalls that need to be avoided to ensure the smooth running of a performance until it's time to say "And curtain up!" after the applause every evening.
