They are the most famous sisters in the Netherlands: the so-called A-Team, Amalia, Alexia, and Ariane, the daughters of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima. Now that they have come of age, the younger daughters are also attracting public interest. However, only the firstborn, Princess Amalia, bears responsibility. Her path is predetermined as the future queen of the Netherlands. Princess Alexia and Princess Ariane, however, have a choice. Will they serve the royal family like their great-aunt Margriet, for whom this has been her life's work for more than 60 years? Or will they follow the example of King Willem-Alexander's brothers, who went their own way as “freelance royals”?
Princes Friso and Constantijn were encouraged by their parents to lead independent lives. Work, study, personal responsibility—that was the motto of Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus. Friso rose to become a top manager at a nuclear technology company before his life ended tragically in 2013. Constantijn pulls the strings in the tech and start-up scene. As a networker, consultant, and event organizer, he works to build innovation and technology ecosystems. And yet he is ready to represent the crown when needed. Willem-Alexander's brothers have shown that royal lineage and career are compatible. The Dutch royal family is playing a pioneering role in this regard.
The film looks at three generations of royal siblings and highlights what it means for the firstborn to take the throne and what it is like for the younger ones to grow up as royals on the reserve bench.
