He calls them his demons - the fears and neuroses that keep him awake at night in his house on the island of Farö.
Ingmar Bergman is under observation.
The Swedish theater and film director Ingmar Bergman had a decisive influence on cinema.
At the end of his life, he left behind over 40 films and countless theater productions.
He would have been 100 years old in 2018.
To mark the occasion, Henrike Sandner's documentary "Ingmar Bergman - Lord of the Demons" features interviews with the filmmaker's most important companions and friends, including actress Liv Ullmann.
Corinna Harfouch lends her voice to the film.
In addition, excerpts from Ingmar Bergman's most important works in the cinema and on stage will be shown, because Bergman, who won three Oscars and was honored in Cannes as "Best Director of All Time", can only be understood through his work.
His private life also plays a role in his work.
Stable relationships are rare in Ingmar Bergman's life and usually short-lived.
As a father, he is absent, selfish and inconsiderate.
He feels this guilt and yet can do nothing to counter it except escape into fantasy.
"I was constantly plagued by desire, fear, anxiety and a guilty conscience," Bergman says of himself.
Through his films and theater productions, he manages to become master of the demons he suffers from.
