Dramaturg is not actually one profession - in fact, there are at least ten at once.
The term comes from the Greek and means "playwright".
Originally, dramaturges were only responsible for selecting and editing dramatic texts.
Today, however, head dramaturge Andrea Koschwitz has a lot more to do: she selects plays, rewrites texts, supervises productions, tracks down young authors and current topics, collects background information, designs programme booklets, organizes audience discussions, develops season concepts and much more.
A dramaturge must therefore be a real multi-tasker with a passion for literature, art and theater: from the color of the program booklet to the contemporary interpretation of old play texts - they are asked about everything.
They help to sharpen the artistic profile of a production and the theater.
The dramaturge is also allowed to do something that not everyone is allowed to do: criticize the director!
