Football is passion and a way of life for fans around the world, but for homosexual men it is "one of the most hostile environments", as FIFA referee Igor Benevenuto says. There are 500.000 professional male footballers worldwide, but only 7 of them have publicly come out as homosexual. We live in the enlightened, liberal and tolerant 21st century; there are openly homosexual politicians, soldiers, TV stars and musicians. Only in football almost nobody comes out. Why is that?
The feature documentary "The Last Taboo", by Emmy Award winning producer Leopold Hoesch tells the moving story of the few homosexual players in professional football who had the courage to come out. It is a film about the inner and outer conflicts of these courageous men, whose biographies could not be more different and yet who are always faced with the same problem: the choice between self-denial or liberation. The protagonists talk about their wishes, dreams and their fight for a life of equality. The film gives footballers from various national leagues a chance to have their say as Homophobia in football is a worldwide phenomenon.
"The Last Taboo" is a film about homophobia in football, but it is also a film about society: are we really as tolerant as we think we are?
