Aldi against Lidl
The Duel

It is the great struggle for the small prices. With a total of more than 7,600 branches, Germany's largest discounters Aldi and Lidl are fighting for the favour of customers. They offer everything from basic foodstuffs to drills, from shrimp to clothes. They make 35 billion in sales per year in Germany alone. Their motto: quality at a low price. "ZDFzeit" and BROADVIEW TV want to find out more and have the discounters compete in a duel: Aldi versus Lidl. Who is better in price, who offers the best quality?

Two average German families go on a big shopping spree for "ZDFzeit" - once only at Lidl, once only at Aldi. Whose groceries are cheaper? Can own brands replace the favourite products that have often been used to for many years? The products of both discounters are compared in numerous individual tests: Which batteries last longer? Which flowers are fresher? Which clothes are more durable?

Konny Reimann also lends a hand: Germany's best-known emigrant puts drills, jigsaws and angle grinders through their paces.

In the end, there can only be one winner. Who is Germany's best discounter?
